Oil and Gas

Environmental factors are of extreme importance in the energy industry. The drilling of oil and gas wells and the extraction and transportation of oil and gas systems need to be designed for severe environmental conditions such as fluid currents, waves, wind, and earthquakes. Oil wells can extend several thousand meters in depth, and the oil and gas is transported through long pipelines that may be laid or buried in ground or seabed. The reservoirs containing the oil can subside, oil wells can erode, and bore wells can collapse, affecting the reservoir yield and the useful life of oil wells. Simulation can help predict the useful life of reservoirs and the effect of hydraulic fractures, as well as assist with the design of extraction techniques for maximum yield. In offshore structures, the interaction of risers and pipelines with their foundations and underlying soil also warrants serious consideration and requires a range of material models along with special contact and loading conditions. Engineers must also perform fully nonlinear large displacement dynamic analyses to include time-dependent loads and structural response.

The Abaqus Unified FEA product suite provides realistic simulation solutions that produce accurate predictions suited to the needs of the Offshore and Oil and Gas industries. Along with the capacity to accurately predict soil deformation, reservoir subsidence, structural strength, and deformations in the large displacement nonlinear regime, Abaqus pre- and postprocessing technology coupled with its sophisticated solvers provide a complete and reliable solution for Offshore structural analysis, as well as the Oil and Gas industry. Static, modal, and dynamic analyses can be performed using a wide range of material models under different loading, boundary, and contact conditions. You may simultaneously include loads due to fluid currents with wave and wind loading, and you can compute detailed time-dependent responses for floating and non-floating Offshore structures. Contact modeling capabilities can be used for the efficient simulation of bore-hole collapse, and the erosion modeling capability and pore-pressure cohesive elements can be used to simulate sand production in oil wells and hydraulic fracture phenomena, respectively.
