Total Hip Replacement

Methods Development and Technology Transfer Services

While total hip replacement has become a common surgical practice, there are ongoing efforts to optimize implant design and to extend durability and joint life. The Abaqus FEA product suite from SIMULIA can be used to examine the interaction between the implant and the femur, reducing design time and increasing patient comfort and satisfaction.

Complex geometries, such as those for implants and femurs, are easily meshed with tetrahedral elements using automatic meshing techniques. Traditionally, tetrahedral elements performed poorly in contact analyses. However, the modified second-order tetrahedral element, exclusive to Abaqus FEA products, is robust in contact simulations, while maintaining all the advantages and accuracy of a second-order element.

SIMULIA engineers have significant experience with design issues related to orthopedic devices like these as well other medical devices such as stents, medical seals, and surgical equipment.
