The requirements for rolled sections are becoming more complex, while design cycle times are becoming shorter. Corus (formerly British Steel) worked with SIMULIA Services to develop an integrated rolling mill simulation system for long products.

The system encapsulates the rolling analysis methodology in an easy-to-use, application-specific, customized version of the Abaqus FEA product suite from SIMULIA. It allows the mill design engineers (with little or no FEA experience) to validate their designs using simulation, to carry out sensitivity studies on key rolling parameters, and to investigate the effectiveness of novel rolling techniques.

The use of simulation reduces the requirement to build expensive and complex prototype rolls, providing rapid results and reducing the lead-time and cost for the development of new sections.
