Vortex Induced Vibration in an Elastic Structure

Challenge

This benchmark problem illustrates a strong coupling interaction between the fluid flow and an elastic structure. This problem has been cited in several references on stability of coupling algorithms.

Solution

A transient simulation using AcuSolve coupled with Abaqus was performed. The Abaqus model uses large geometric effects. The pressure difference due to the cross-flow causes the structure to deform about its primary modes, shedding vortices, which in turn cause further deformation.

Benefit

This example illustrates that the partioned solution approach employed can be used for strongly coupled physics problems. Abaqus CAE was used to create the combined fluid and structural visualization.
