Cold Expansion Process of Mandrel Penetration

This simulation describes the cold expansion process where a mandrel is passed through a sleeve assembled inside a hole. The combination of the mandrel’s diameter and the sleeve’s thickness expands the hole, creating residual compressive tangential stresses around the hole. These residual stresses reduce the stress concentration factor at the hole, thus increasing its fatigue life.
The simulation was done using Abaqus/Explicit with many different parameters like the thickness of the plate, the effect of two holes on the stress pattern, and the velocity of the mandrel. The plate with the hole was modeled u sing aluminum, the sleeve with steel, and the mandrel with an analytic rigid material.
