Crashworthiness of a Two-Place Turbine Helicopter Skid Landing Gear
Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
Georgia Tech Aerospace Engineering Graduate student Kshitij Shrotri and his team used Abaqus FEA software in their 1st place award winning 23rd American Helicopter Society (AHS)/Bell Helicopters Rotorcraft Design competition. Their Two-Place Turbine Helicopter design Crashworthiness was done per Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 27 using Abaqus/Explicit. This image shows deformation/stresses post-yielding during a Roll-over Landing Maneuver. Static-Kinetic Exponential Friction Contact property and Master-Slave interaction between the ground and skids was prescribed. Skids were modeled using beam elements. Rigid connectors connect the fuselage, a reference node with mass and inertia properties. Initial velocity was prescribed for the single time step analysis.
