Structural Fault Detection using Wave Propagation and Neural Networks

Jeremy Ong
University of Manchester, UK

In my Final Year Project entitled Structural Fault Detection using Wave Propagation and Neural Networks at the University of Manchester, I made use of Abaqus FEA software as tool to provide me with a wider pool of data then an actual experiment would have provided. The model created was to replicate the apparatus in the first figure whereby a steel ball launcher was used to strike the end of a circular rod specimen. There was a total of 22 rods differing in slot positions and slot depths but all the same length. The propagating stress wave induced by the impact was affected by the slots. By measuring them with piezo electric transducers, I was able to obtain strain/stress waveforms which had slight differences from one rod to the next because of the different slots positions/depths. Abaqus FEA software enabled me to complete the analysis on all the rods, providing me with ample time to use the data for further processing in Neural Networks.
