The Lateral Torsional Buckling Strength of Steel I-Girders with Corrugated Webs

Daming Yu and Richard Sause
Lehigh University

In this research the lateral torsional buckling (LTB) strength of steel I-girders with corrugated webs was investigated using ABAQUS. "Buckle analysis" was used to determine the elastic LTB strength. Comprehensive finite element (FE) models were developed to determine the inelastic LTB strength of CWGs using nonlinear static analysis with the "Riks" method. The effects of lateral unbraced length, initial geometric imperfections, steel stress-strain behavior, and residual stresses were considered in the modeling. The picture shows the deformed shape of a simply supported CWG at the end of a nonlinear inelastic analysis. The top flange deflects laterally with a local buckling close to the mid-span.
