On the Prediction of Bearing Strength in GLARE Fiber Metal Laminates

Next generation aerospace materials combine both monolithic metals and composite fibers to create hybrids that behave superiorly to their constituents. This project used ABAQUS to develop and simulate detailed models of mechanically fastened joints composed of GLARE fibre metal laminates. From the analysis, a new failure criterion and definition of yield strength for this class of materials was developed and subsequently validated with experiment, giving aircraft designers a valuable tool for the production of reliable aircraft components. This research was published in two separate manuscripts in The Journal of Composite Materials.
