FE Simulations of indentation of Anisotropic Elastic-Plastic Solids Using Pyramidal and Blunt indenters

Ajit Batwal, Dr. Pedro Peralta, Dr. Antonio Rinaldi
Arizona State University, USA

The main purpose of this research was to study the effects of material anisotropy on the surface deformation modes observed during indentation. A parametric study was performed to study the effects of various parameters affecting indentation in isotropic elastic-plastic solids. A single crystal plasticity (SCP) model using Bassani's implementation was used to generate stress-strain relations in different directions of anisotropy, which were then used in Hill's criterion to simulate the difference in hardening rates due to anisotropy. A very good qualitative correlation was obtained between the experimental and simulation results.
